Dr. HANS RAJ, MBBS(AFMC), MD(DU)

Dr. Hans Raj, MD has been a pioneer in the field of Clinical Neurophysiology since 1982. He was among the first in the larger part of the country to do Nerve Conduction (NCV), Electromyography (EMG) and Evoked Potential Studies (Visual, Auditory and Somato sensory) for the diagnosis and management of Neuro-muscular diseases causing pain, numbness, tingling, weakness in arms and legs, which assisted the neurologists, orthopedists and other specialists to know where the nerves and muscles were affected.

He also developed expertise in Ocular Physiology to do ISCEV Standard (International Society of Clinical Electrophysiology for Vision) VEP, Pattern ERG, Full field ERG and Multifocal ERG, EOG to detect if the problem is in Retina (Rods or Cones), or at macula or in the optic nerve.

He acquired much of his training from his passion and under long mentorship of renowned Physiology-Scientist Dr. A. S. Paintal, FRS, Padma Vibhushan, and with whom he published his research work on J receptors and H reflex for breathlessness and fatigue in the international journals. He also acquired much of his knowledge and skills through courses and observerships at Dr. Santosh Kumar’s Electrodiagnostic Centre at Everett, Professor Eisen’s Centre at Univ of British Columbia, and Dr Bhagwan Shahani’s Hands-on courses. He is a member of

The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM),

The International Society of Clinical Electrophysiology for Vision (ISCEV), and

The New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS).

He is an AFMC alumnus, and has served in the Short Service of the Indian Army Medical Corps, and has been an ad-hoc faculty and examiner in the Physiology Department of Lady Irwin College, Delhi, and did his post-graduation from Univ of Delhi under Professor Paintal. He has participated in many of the national and international seminars and delivered lectures.

His research credentials are listed herewith + .

He has had the privilege to offer his services to all sections of society, including the VVIPs, which include the former President of India, The queen of Bhutan, and a few of the senior diplomats. He has been a consultant at the VIMHANS, Primus and Holy Family Hospitals, and currently is a Senior Consultant in Clinical Neurophysiology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi, besides being available at this Clinic.

USP: SCIENTIFIC PASSION IN MEDICAL PRACTICE – TEST DONE BY DOCTOR HIMSELF - INSTANTANEOUS REPORT GENERATION

He has best of the world standard equipments from Germany, USA and Canada.

Services

1. NERVE CONDUCTION STUDIES (NCS OR NCV):

Many of the nerves, especially of upper and lower limbs, are tested by stimulating them at multiple sites with a small harmless current mimicking the natural impulse, and recording from a muscle or over the skin by sticking ECG type electrodes. Any compression or damage to the nerve along its path is detected and its severity known. A tingling current like sensation is felt, which is absolutely harmless, and does not interfere with even pacemakers, and is easily tolerated by all age groups.

2. ELECTROMYOGRAPHY (EMG):

examines which muscle is weak due to nerve problem or muscle disease. It involves inserting a very fine acupuncture type 27G sterile disposable needle and recording muscle activity, much like the ECG. Mild discomfort of the needle may be felt and there may be a slight oozing from the site. The international guidelines allow the test to be carried out even with high INR with precautions.

3. SOMATO SENSORY EVOKED POTENTIALS (SSEP):

Involves stimulating the nerves at ankle or wrist and recording over spinal cord and skull (much like EEG) to know the integrity and conduction in the spinal and brain pathways.

4. BRAINSTEM AUDITORY EVOKED RESPONSE (BAER):

Involves applying click sound impulse repetitively over the ear and recording the response from scalp over the auditory cortex – much like EEG, to assess the sensitivity of ear (cochlea) and the integrity and maturity of the nerve of hearing (auditory nerve).

5. VISUAL EVOKED POTENTIAL (VEP or VER):

Involves seeing a checker pattern on TV or flashes of lights and recording the response from the scalp over vision area of the brain (much like EEG). This evaluates the function and status of the nerve of the eye (the Optic Nerve).

6. ELECTRO RETINO GRAPHY (ERG):

Involves recording response of retina (film in the eye) from a thin metallic thread placed under the eyelid, to a flash of light under dark adapted or light adapted condition. This way Rod and Cone function can be evaluated.

7. MULTI FOCAL ERG:

evaluates discrete areas of retina for their status which may be responsible for poor vision.

INSTRUCTIONS TO BE FOLLOWED FOR THE ABOVE TESTS:

  1. PLEASE TAKE A PRIOR APPOINTMENT

  2. DURATION OF THE TEST MAY BE FROM 30 Minutes TO 1 Hour

  3. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY LOTION OR CREAM ON LIMBS BEFORE THE TEST

  4. HEAD SHOULD BE SHAMPOOED BEFORE THE TEST AND NO OIL TO BE APPLIED.

  5. WEAR LOOSE CLOTHINGS.

  6. EYES MAY BE DILATED FOR ERG TEST, AND ONE CANNOT DRIVE AFTER THAT

  7. FASTING IS NOT REQUIRED
